The AS newspaper in Spain reports that due to an impending matchup with Inter Miami Club and Messi, Al Nassr Club and Cristiano Ronaldo abruptly called off their two friendlies against Shanghai Shenhua and Zhejiang Club on January 24 and January 28, alleging ailments.
Prior to his China tour, Cristiano Ronaldo sustained an injury, according to Arab Sports. However, due to his obligations to the organizers here, the well-known Portuguese player still took a flight to China on January 21 with Al Nassr Club.
Many believe Cristiano Ronaldo would prefer to wait to compete with Messi by not playing in China.
On January 24 and 28, two sold-out games against Shanghai Shenhua and Zhejiang teams were scheduled. Chinese supporters are also getting ready to give Cristiano Ronaldo a hero’s welcome and to support him throughout the game. However, Cristiano Ronaldo revealed that he will not be able to play due to a calf injury during the pre-match press conference, just before kickoff.
“I’m dying to play. I apologize to all Chinese fans, though, as I am unable to perform due to an injury. Please try not to be depressed and frustrated. As you are aware, there are several aspects of football outside your control. I haven’t experienced many injuries in my 22 years. I’m really sorry since Al Nassr and I came here to enjoy the tour this time. I visited in 2003 or 2004, and I adore your nation. During the press conference, Cristiano Ronaldo said, “I really like it here.”
Chinese supporters were furious as soon as they learned that Cristiano Ronaldo will not be playing. A great deal of money was spent by many on stadium tickets in order to see this well-known athlete perform. They were so deeply dissatisfied and chose not to support Al Nassr Club’s friendly match schedule. Many Chinese fans even believed they had been duped.
On January 21, Cristiano Ronaldo and Al Nasr Club took a plane to China.
Al Nassr Club stated on the evening of January 23 that it would be canceling two matches with Shanghai Shenhua and Zhejiang clubs and returning ticket costs to fans in response to a wave of protests from Chinese fans. However, individuals who unintentionally reserved rooms and plane tickets to Shenzhen City in order to see the two matches still suffered financial losses.
The AS daily claims: “There are a lot of commercial components to Cristiano Ronaldo and Al Nassr Club’s China tour. As a result, the cancellation will negatively impact the prestige of both the Portuguese player and the Saudi Arabian team. Another contributing factor is that, with a match against Inter Miami Club and star player Messi on February 2, Al Nassr and Cristiano Ronaldo placed more emphasis on the significant friendly event Riyadh Season Cup. Chinese supporters will be even more unhappy if Cristiano arrives soon and emerges to challenge Messi.”
