The 19-year-old, who played college basketball for the University of Southern California (USC) Trojans, announced on social media that he will keep his academic eligibility and use the NCAA transfer site. “I’ve had a year with some ups and downs, but it’s all added to my growth as a man, student, and athlete,” James wrote, thanking USC, his family, friends, physicians, athletic trainers, and fans for their support.

James had a cardiac crisis in July 2023 and had to have an operation for a congenital heart abnormality, which forced him to miss five months. According to ESPN, he must be assessed and authorized by the league’s fitness-to-play panel before participating in team practices or being selected in the draft. While he can still make media interviews without approval, the NBA requires prospective rookies to attend team scouting activities and undergo a physical check. James will work out and interview with select teams before the draft withdrawal date on May 29.
