Darwin Nunez’s decision to remove all Liverpool-related images from his Instagram account on Sunday night has stoked rumors about his future with the team. Although the 24-year-old has scored 18 goals this season in all competitions, his inconsistent play in front of goal has earned him criticism from Liverpool fans and commentators.
Nunez, who signed a contract worth £85 million from Benfica in June 2022, has four years left on his Liverpool contract. Over the weekend, there were rumors that Nunez would be joining Barcelona.
Since Nunez deleted all of the photos of him playing for Liverpool from his official Instagram profile late on Sunday night, supporters of the club are now worried that this might be his last season at Anfield.
The only pictures that were left were of his family and his matches with Benfica and Uruguay’s national team. Nunez has just one goal in his past 11 appearances in all competitions and has started as a substitute for Liverpool in their last two Premier League games.
Nunez squandered a great opportunity to tie the score against Everton in his final start for Liverpool, and Sean Dyche’s team went on to win 2-0 at Goodison Park.
Jamie Carragher questioned the striker’s long-term viability for Liverpool during his analysis, calling the blunder “unforgiveable.”
Nunez’s missed opportunity prior to halftime is unacceptable at this stage. That is unacceptable at this stage, especially with Liverpool vying for the championship, Carragher stated.
