Liverpool are reportedly revisiting their interest in goalkeeper Alex McCarthy, whom they initially tried to sign a decade ago. McCarthy, who is leaving Southampton after eight years as his contract expires this summer, has attracted attention from other clubs as well, including Celtic and Newcastle United.
Liverpool’s goalkeeper situation is in need of attention, with Adrian’s contract nearing its end and the likelihood of him receiving another one-year deal at the age of 37 seeming slim, particularly under a new manager. Additionally, Caoimhin Kelleher’s impressive performances have sparked a desire for regular first-team football, prompting Liverpool to reassess their goalkeeping options and potentially create a shortlist.
This has led to Liverpool reigniting their interest in Alex McCarthy, whom they previously failed to sign in 2014. At that time, Liverpool sought a goalkeeper to provide competition for Simon Mignolet, and McCarthy, having previously played under manager Brendan Rodgers at Reading, was a target. However, McCarthy chose to join Queen’s Park Rangers instead, citing the opportunity for more playing time as the deciding factor.
However, McCarthy’s stint at QPR did not go as planned, as he made only three Premier League appearances during their relegation season. He was subsequently sold to Crystal Palace, where his career stagnated. It took a few more years and another transfer before he found regular playing time at Southampton.
There were reports suggesting that Liverpool came close to signing McCarthy in 2019 when Mignolet departed. However, they ultimately signed Adrian on a free transfer instead. Now, a decade after his initial rejection, McCarthy may finally have an opportunity to rectify his decision and join Liverpool.
