During Belgium’s Euro 2024 match against Slovakia, striker Romelu Lukaku had a goal disallowed due to the use of sound technology. This technology, similar to the “snickometer” used in cricket, detected that Belgium’s Lois Openda had handled the ball before crossing it to Lukaku, who had scored the apparent equalizer. Slovakia had taken an early 1-0 lead through a goal from Ivan Schranz.
The sound-based technology that identifies contact between objects was announced to be implemented at Euro 2024 prior to the tournament. It is derived from the cricket snickometer, which analyzes sound frequencies to determine if the ball has struck the bat.
Belgium will face Romania and Ukraine in their remaining group stage fixtures at Euro 2024 after this disallowed goal against Slovakia.
