Colombia defeated Costa Rica 3-0 in Group D Sunday, securing their berth in the Copa America quarterfinals due to goals from Luis Diaz, Davinson Sanchez, and Jhon Cordoba.
Colombia started strong and seized the lead in the 31st minute through Liverpool winger Diaz, who confidently scored a penalty kick after Costa Rica goalkeeper Patrick Sequeira tripped Cordoba in the box.
Costa Rica pressed for an equaliser, leaving themselves vulnerable on the break, and Colombia took advantage, with Sanchez headed in from a corner in the 59th minute and Cordoba completing the scoring three minutes later after being sent through on goal by James Rodriguez.
Colombia leads their group after two matches, with six points, followed by Costa Rica and Brazil, who each have one. Brazil plays Paraguay later on Friday.
Colombia’s eleventh consecutive victory in all competitions extended their excellent record of 20 wins and five draws since March 2022, with their most recent setback being in February 2022, a 1-0 loss to Argentina. — Reuters
