Arisa Trew, a 13-year-old Australian star, has been shortlisted for one of the world’s most prestigious sports prizes, among luminaries such as Lionel Messi

Arisa Trew, an Australian teenager, has been nominated for the prestigious Laureus World Sports Awards, with Lionel Messi, Novak Djokovic, and Erling Haaland.

The 13-year-old from Queensland’s Gold Coast was nominated on Tuesday for the 2024 Laureus World Action Sportsperson of the Year Award.

The skateboarding prodigy was nominated alongside BMX legend Beth Shriever and surfer Felipe Toledo.

Trew became the first girl to land the notoriously difficult 720 maneuver in competition in 2023, and she did so in front of the sport’s most recognized figure, Tony Hawk.

Hawk was the first to land the feat, creating skateboarding history in 1985, and he said Trew’s attempt ‘brought the house down’.

The incredible feat drove Trew to victory in the women’s final of the Tony Hawk Vert Alert, which she won ahead of Asahi Kaihara and Reese Nelson.

‘I’m so excited to be the first girl to land a 720 in the world,’ Trew said afterwards.

‘I wouldn’t have been able to do it without the crowd hyping me up.’

Later that year, Trew duplicated the trick at the X-Games in California, where she won the vert gold medal.

Erling Haaland, who won the Manchester City Treble, will compete for the Laureus World Sportsman of the Year award alongside Lionel Messi, Novak Djokovic, and Max Verstappen.

Norwegian striker Haaland scored 52 goals in all competitions in his debut season, helping City win the Premier League, FA Cup, and Champions League last season.

He will face Argentine legend Messi, who earned a record eighth Ballon d’Or and just signed with MLS team Inter Miami.

Serbian tennis player Djokovic, a four-time winner of the award, has won three Grand Slams and equaled the record with 24 titles.
