Liverpool are ramping up their pursuit of Real Sociedad’s Martin Zubimendi, aiming to bolster their midfield even further. Despite having added Ryan Gravenberch, Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai, and Wataru Endo last summer, the Reds are still on the lookout for a top-tier midfielder to fill the number six role.
Recent developments indicate that Liverpool have included Zubimendi in their midfield targets and are gearing up to negotiate with Real Sociedad. Journalist Florian Plettenberg reports that Liverpool is actively engaging with the Basque club to secure the Euro 2024 champion.
It remains unclear whether Real Sociedad will enforce Zubimendi’s €60 million (£51.5 million) release clause or if they’re open to negotiating a lower fee. While Zubimendi had previously expressed satisfaction with staying at Sociedad, it’s now suggested that he is eager to join Liverpool without delay.
The Reds are not alone in their interest—Arsenal, Manchester United, and Barcelona have also been linked with Zubimendi. However, Liverpool may have an edge due to Zubimendi’s connection with Xabi Alonso, a former Liverpool player and current Bayer Leverkusen manager. Alonso, who previously managed Zubimendi during his stint with Real Sociedad’s B team and now shares the same agency, could sway Zubimendi’s decision.
At 25, Zubimendi has made 188 competitive appearances for Real Sociedad, helping the team secure the Copa del Rey in 2019-20 and achieve Champions League qualification in 2022-23. His impressive performances, including a key role in Spain’s Euro 2024 triumph, add to his appeal as Liverpool looks to strengthen their squad.
