The reigning Bundesliga champions are taking steps to approach Liverpool’s promising center-back, Sepp van den Berg.
Bayer Leverkusen has shown interest in the 22-year-old defender as a precautionary measure amid potential defensive departures this summer. However, according to Sky Germany, the German club has not yet made any official moves to contact Liverpool.
Van den Berg’s transfer fee is estimated to be around €25 million. Leverkusen will face stiff competition from Brentford in the race to secure the Dutch defender’s signature. A positive development for Leverkusen is that Van den Berg is reportedly keen on returning to the Bundesliga.
After spending two seasons on loan in Germany with Schalke and Mainz, Van den Berg has demonstrated his capabilities, despite playing for teams that were primarily focused on avoiding relegation.
Van den Berg’s potential move could also pave the way for two of Leverkusen’s standout center-backs from last season, Piero Hincapie and Odilon Kossounou, to leave. Both players are said to have expressed their desire to move on this summer.
