Former Premier League defender Andre Wisdom has made a comeback to professional football after a four-year hiatus following a violent attack. The 31-year-old has signed a short-term contract with Northern Irish club Derry City.
Wisdom, who rose through the ranks at Liverpool and made 22 appearances for the club alongside stars like Jamie Carragher, Steven Gerrard, and Luis Suarez, had subsequent loan spells at West Bromwich Albion and Norwich City before joining Derby County permanently.
In 2020, Wisdom’s career was abruptly interrupted when he was attacked by masked robbers in Liverpool. The assailants, who stole his watch, stabbed him in the head and buttocks. Although he returned to play a year later, Wisdom struggled with the aftermath of the attack and admitted he was no longer the player he once was due to multiple surgeries.
After spending two years without a club, Wisdom joined non-league Warrington Town last season. With his new role at Derry City, he expressed his relief and enthusiasm, saying, “I can now say again I have a job. The will was always there, but it felt like it wasn’t the way at times. I’m fit, raring to go, I’ve done a full pre-season, and I’m grateful for the opportunity.”
