A once-promising Arsenal talent, Gedion Zelalem, is now a free agent following the termination of his contract with a Dutch second-tier team.
Zelalem, who was once hailed as the ‘new Cesc Fabregas,’ has found himself without a club after being released by FC Den Bosch. The 27-year-old midfielder had made 38 appearances for the club but has not featured at all this season.
FC Den Bosch announced the contract termination, stating: “Gedion Zelalem’s contract has been terminated with immediate effect, with the player’s consent. Zelalem joined FC Den Bosch in January 2023 and played 38 matches for the team. However, he has not been included in this season’s squad and has been given permission to seek opportunities elsewhere.”
Technical Director Bernard Schuiteman explained that the decision was made because Zelalem no longer fit into the club’s plans. “We agreed with Gedion to terminate his contract. This is the best outcome for both him and FC Den Bosch, as he no longer fits into our plans for the first team. It is unfortunate, especially since his contract was extended under previous management, and he was considered a key player for the future. However, with new management comes new ideas, leading to different decisions. From a human perspective, it is regrettable, but Gedion, who is experienced in professional football, understands the nature of these situations. We hope he soon finds a team where he is a better fit and wish him all the best in his future endeavors.”
Zelalem, who developed through Arsenal’s youth academy, left the club in 2019 without making a Premier League appearance. During his time with Arsenal, he had loan spells with Rangers in Scotland and VVV-Venlo in the Netherlands. After leaving the Gunners, he played in Major League Soccer with Sporting Kansas City and New York City FC before returning to Europe with FC Den Bosch.
