It was a brilliant idea, and Nestor Lorenzo’s team performed admirably, annihilating a pitiful Chile side that remains rooted to the bottom of the ten-team qualification group.

Cordoba converted a Diaz cross in the 45th minute, but the shot was called back for offside against Diaz.

Seven minutes after the break, Chile gave the Colombians a second goal when they attempted to play the ball out from the back and Benjamin Kusevic passed it to Rodriguez, who squared to Liverpool winger Diaz to convert.

Substitute Duran made it 3-0 in the 82nd minute after another midfield error allowed Sinisterra to break and feed the Aston Villa forward, who made no mistakes.

Paraguay improved its prospects of securing one of the six automatic qualification slots when substitute Antonio Sanabria scored twice in a 2-1 victory over Venezuela.

Full-back Jon Aramburu put Venezuela ahead in the 25th minute after running down the right and collecting a pass from Yeferson Soteldo, which he buried in the bottom corner.

Sanabria, a Torino striker, came in at halftime and leveled the score for sixth-placed Paraguay by sliding in to meet a low cross from Junior Alonso.

Sanabria then scored the goal in the 74th minute, leading a counter-attack and finishing with a header from close range.

Later on Tuesday, Argentina will host Bolivia, while Brazil will face Peru.
