In a light-hearted moment in the tunnel at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, a Spurs mascot cheekily remarked to the Liverpool skipper, “Van Dijk, come to Tottenham; we haven’t got any good defenders at the moment!” The playful jab drew laughs from those around, including Van Dijk himself, who smiled as he made his way back to the away dressing room. Sky Sports’ Mark Chapman and the crew were in hysterics over the honesty of the comment.

Spurs entered the semi-final hoping to avoid a repeat of their recent 6-3 defeat to Liverpool in the Premier League. Currently sitting 12th in the league, Ange Postecoglou’s side has not won since their 4-3 Carabao Cup quarter-final victory over Manchester United and has struggled defensively due to a flurry of injuries. Radu Dragusin and Archie Gray have been the regular defensive pairing, often targeted by opposition teams.

Postecoglou commented on the team’s struggles, suggesting that even Mo Salah, widely regarded as the best player in the league this season, might not be able to replicate his form in the current Spurs setup. “Mo is a world-class player, but if you put him in our team now, I’m not sure he’ll have that same level of performance because of the situation we’re in as a group,” he said. He emphasized the need for a solid foundation, good form, and cohesive teamwork, all of which are lacking at the moment.

Salah has been in exceptional form this season, netting 21 goals in 27 games across all competitions, but even he would find it challenging to shine amid Spurs’ current woes.
