Chelsea are leading the race for Kobbie Mainoo if he leaves Manchester United, as they reach a contract dispute with academy poster child, 19, and fear a cash squeeze

Chelsea is reportedly leading the race to sign Kobbie Mainoo if the Manchester United midfielder departs Old Trafford. United has hit an impasse in contract negotiations with Mainoo’s representatives, which has attracted interest from top clubs across Europe. While a sale could happen this month, it is more likely to occur at the end of the season.

Mail Sport understands Chelsea is prepared to make a move for the 19-year-old if he cannot agree on new terms, although they will face competition from Premier League rivals and clubs abroad. United remains hopeful of reaching a compromise to retain their homegrown star, who is valued at £65 million. Mainoo is currently under contract until June 2027 but is reportedly seeking a new deal worth around £200,000 a week, including bonuses, to reflect his status as a first-team regular.

However, United is focused on reducing their wage bill during this transfer window by offloading high earners like Casemiro (£375,000 a week), Marcus Rashford (£315,000), and Antony (£200,000). This financial pressure has complicated negotiations with Mainoo, who believes he could secure better terms elsewhere. Additionally, he is concerned about United’s direction and his prospects of playing in the Champions League, especially with the club sitting 13th in the Premier League under Ruben Amorim.

Mainoo has shown significant potential, particularly during his breakthrough season under Erik ten Hag, although he has experienced a dip in form this term. He remains a symbol of United’s esteemed academy, but financial difficulties and compliance with profit and sustainability regulations have made his departure a possibility.

Mail Sport understands Todd Boehly's Chelsea side are leading the race to snap up Mainoo if he should leave Old Trafford

If given a choice between Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho, United would prefer to sell Garnacho, who has struggled to adapt to Amorim’s 3-4-3 system. The only players deemed untouchable are summer signing Leny Yoro and Amad Diallo, who is close to signing a new contract. United aims to reduce their wage bill by nearly £1 million a week through potential departures.

United have reached a stalemate in contract talks with Mainoo’s representatives, putting Chelsea and other European giants on red alert

As for Casemiro, he is linked with a move to Saudi club Al Nassr, while Olympiacos and Real Betis have shown interest in Antony. Additionally, AC Milan, Borussia Dortmund, and Tottenham are pursuing Rashford on loan, depending on the wage coverage from United and the fee involved.

Man United have also considered letting Alejandro Garnacho - another academy graduate - go
