In Manchester United’s Premier League match against Southampton at Old Trafford, winger Antony gave a performance that could have been considered a miss of the season.
Alejandro Garnacho blasted the ball across goal as United surged forward after Manuel Ugarte’s own goal in the first half had put the Red Devils behind 1-0.
With the goal at his mercy, Antony reached the back post, but the ball bounced into Aaron Ramsdale’s hands after striking his shin.
After missing a great chance to give his team an equalizer, the £82 million attacker laid on the ground in the six-yard box, staring up at the sky.
.
Meanwhile, Commentator Darren Fletcher of TNT Sports was shocked by what he had just witnessed.
As Ramsdale thankfully held the ball to his chest, Fletcher cried, “I can’t believe he missed it.”
Ally McCoist, a co-commentator, was also baffled and asked why Antony chose to go to ground instead of continuing to stand and tap the ball home.
“Fleetch, why is he going to ground?” McCoist inquired. “The ball is flawless.” Simply slam the ball into the net.
That is simply unthinkable. Well, man, that’s a sitter. It was a brilliant move, but a shocking conclusion.
After a challenging first half for the home team, Kobbie Mainoo was replaced by Antony at halftime.
Despite having to make several quick stops, Andre Onana was unable to stop a Southampton corner that bounced off Ugarte and into the net.
United was expected to come alive with Antony’s debut, but Ruben Amorim could only watch in dismay as the Brazilian wasted one of his easiest opportunities of the season.
