Goalie Jack Butland hilariously smashed the ball into his own net to give Manchester United a strange lead against Rangers in the Europa League.
The goalkeeper appeared to have an easy time with Christian Eriksen’s corner early in the second half, but the ball grazed the back of his glove before falling behind him.
Bruno Fernandes’ attempt from inside the box was deflected over by a deft United move, and Eriksen’s simple delivery into the area came from the ensuing corner.
Butland, who briefly played for Old Trafford on loan in 2023, sped off his line to get a fist clear but made a terrible mistake when he tried to do so under duress.
Rather, the ball skidded into the net after swerving away from his knuckles.
Following his error, the 31-year-old was obviously depressed.
Matthijs de Ligt’s header was chalked off following a foul by Leny Yoro, although earlier in the day, United had seen a goal controversially disallowed from another set piece
.
The ball was whipped in, and it was decided that Yoro had pushed over Davy Propper.
The gaffe stunned Rangers veteran Ally McCoist. During the live transmission on TNT Sports, he asked, “Where do I start with that?” “It’s merely a howler.
No justification for that. It’s a very bad mistake. Jack Butland has to improve.
