Ruben Amorim enjoyed a rare moment of tranquility as he celebrated his birthday in Cheshire with his wife, Maria Joao Diogo, on Monday.
The Manchester United manager marked his 40th birthday but humorously remarked to the press that he felt more like 50 after his challenging start at Old Trafford.
Amorim has navigated a tumultuous beginning at the helm of one of football’s giants, facing the pressures of the impending transfer window.
Despite this, he was seen at a birthday lunch at Cibo Restaurant in Wilmslow with his wife. Cibo is a favored spot for Manchester United stars and staff, having hosted Sir Alex Ferguson and Erik ten Hag in 2023, while Cristiano Ronaldo previously took teammates for a bonding lunch at the Italian eatery’s Hale location.
Sir Alex has frequented the restaurant over the years, and Amorim will surely hope for similar successes.
As he celebrated his birthday, Amorim humorously noted to BBC Sport, “It’s not 40, it’s 50. After two months at Manchester United, it’s 50! It’s a pleasure to spend my birthday here. You have a great country. I will enjoy more tomorrow with the win.”
Amorim has had reasons for frustration due to United’s inconsistent form. Although three wins in their last four matches have boosted morale, the performances have not been convincing. He has lost seven of his first 17 games, with the club experiencing its worst home start in the league in 131 years.
He’s also adapting a squad to his 3-4-3 formation, with no first-team signings made in January thus far.
Supporting him through these challenges is his wife, Maria, who has followed Amorim throughout his managerial career. Their journey together began when they met during his time at Benfica, and they married in 2013 in Coimbra, surrounded by around 160 family and friends.
Maria, a successful interior designer, has made significant sacrifices for her husband’s career, including temporarily leaving her own business to support him during his stint in Qatar.
