After talks for a new contract with Manchester United have stagnated, Chelsea is allegedly in the lead to sign Kobbie Mainoo. The Mail claims that despite his strong showing in the recent 2-2 draw with Liverpool, the young midfielder’s future at Old Trafford is now in doubt.
Mainoo’s current contract expires in the summer of 2027, and Manchester United is eager to sign him. However, it has been claimed that negotiations for an extension have come to a standstill. Mainoo’s status within the team is thought to have changed as a result of United’s inability to offer him terms equivalent to those of their top earners due to Financial Fair Play (FFP) restrictions.
According to sources, 19-year-old Mainoo has voiced worries about the club’s trajectory and their inability to contend for Champions League football. Chelsea is eager to get him to Stamford Bridge, and this circumstance has made it possible.
Mainoo meets the criteria for a contemporary Chelsea acquisition, which is in line with Chelsea owner Todd Boehly’s goal of obtaining youthful talent. Even though he doesn’t turn 20 until April, he has already established himself as a key member of the team and the nation. Since making his debut two years ago, he has made fifty-two appearances for United and contributed ten caps for England, which helped them reach the Euro final last summer.
In addition to other young players like Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, Cesare Casadei, and Carney Chukwuemeka, Mainoo would have to contend with seasoned players like Moises Caicedo, Enzo Fernandez, and Romeo Lavia for a starting position if he were to sign with Chelsea. Lesley Ugochukwu and Andrey Santos, however, are presently on loan.
