When I ask Declan Rice what personal style means to him, he responds, “I dress on feel.” “I prefer to have my own style; I don’t follow trends.”
Two weeks into the new Premier League season, on a soggy August afternoon in South London, I’m talking to Rice.
Wearing a pair of Wales Bonner adidas Sambas and a navy adidas Originals two-piece, the England and Arsenal midfielder is cool, which is quite an accomplishment given that he is among the most expensive English football players in history after moving from West Ham to Arsenal earlier this year for $125 million.
Despite his high price tag, 24-year-old Rice continues to exhibit the easygoing, carefree attitude for which he has gained notoriety since making his debut for West Ham in 2017. Before our conversation, I witnessed him casually doing no-look keepy-ups while being photographed for the newest adidas Originals campaign, so I can honestly say he comes on stronger than ever.
