Mohamed Salah has officially signed a new contract with Liverpool, putting an end to one of the club’s most talked-about contract sagas in recent memory.
The Egyptian winger has agreed to a two-year extension worth £350,000 per week, providing clarity on his future and silencing months of speculation.
In doing so, Liverpool have made a rare exception. Fenway Sports Group, the club’s owners, are typically hesitant to hand long-term deals to players over 30. However, Mail Sport revealed earlier this week that a deal was close, and now it’s been confirmed—Salah, 32, is staying.
Securing Salah’s signature is a major coup for Liverpool. Throughout the season, the forward dropped hints that cast doubt on his future. Back in November, he openly stated he was “more out than in,” fueling rumors of a departure amid persistent interest from Saudi clubs.
Now, with pen to paper, Salah is all in. “Of course I’m very excited,” he told the club’s website. “We have a great team now. We also had a great team before. But I signed because I think we have the chance to win more trophies and I want to enjoy my football.”
Liverpool confirmed the news with flair, referencing Salah’s earlier “more out than in” remark by stating he is now “more in than out.” The announcement was accompanied by a striking image of Salah sitting regally on a throne at the center of Anfield.
Salah’s first stint with Liverpool began in 2017, and with this new deal, he’s on track to complete a decade at the club. “It’s great. I had my best years here,” he said. “I’ve played eight years—hopefully it’ll be 10. I’m enjoying my life, enjoying my football. These were the best years of my career.”
“To the fans, I just want to say I’m very, very happy. I believe we can still win big things together. Keep supporting us and we’ll do everything we can to win more trophies.”
Negotiations with Salah and his agent, Ramy Abbas, had been ongoing for some time. While Salah initially sought a three-year extension, Liverpool compromised with two years—still a significant shift from their usual approach to aging players.
Salah has long been a marquee target for Saudi clubs, particularly Al-Ittihad, who tabled a £150 million offer in August 2023. Liverpool rejected the bid without hesitation, determined to hold onto their talisman.
Even as his previous contract approached its end this summer, interest from the Saudi Pro League remained high. Salah has often been referred to as the league’s “dream signing,” but for now, he’s staying put.
The Egyptian has already carved his name into Liverpool folklore. This season alone, he passed Billy Liddell and Gordon Hodgson to become the club’s third all-time top scorer, with 243 goals in 394 games.
At 32, Salah continues to defy expectations. During the summer, he reportedly led the club’s pre-season fitness tests under incoming manager Arne Slot, showing no signs of slowing down.
He famously scored the opening goal in the 2019 Champions League final against Tottenham, helping Liverpool lift the trophy. That, along with their Premier League title win, solidified his legacy as one of the club’s greatest-ever players.
Meanwhile, Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk is also expected to commit to a new deal soon, as the club looks to secure its core stars. However, Trent Alexander-Arnold may be heading in the opposite direction, with a potential free transfer to Real Madrid looming this summer
