After Arsenal’s Champions League victory over Real Madrid on Wednesday, Myles Lewis-Skelly took to social media to make fun of Antonio Rudiger. Mikel Arteta’s team had built a commanding lead after their 3-0 victory in the first leg of their quarterfinal match at the Emirates last week, and during the game, Rudiger and Lewis-Skelly got into a foot race that ended with the Madrid defender seemingly stamping on the teenage star’s torso as he was grounded.
Lewis-Skelly posted a collage of Wednesday’s images on Instagram, two of which seemed to be directed at his opponent.
The subsequent picture showed the teen laughing at his phone prior to the game, while the third screenshot showed Rudiger’s foot on Lewis-Skelly’s stomach.
Rudiger was not punished in any way for his stamp, and the incident did not seriously hurt Lewis-Skelly.
In response to the incident, Arsenal supporters flocked to social media, with some calling it “cowardly” and others expressing shock that Rudiger was not sanctioned.
“How is this not red?” an admirer wrote. What on earth is the purpose of the VAR?
‘Rudiger’s stamp on Lewis-Skelly is as cowardly as it gets,’ said another. I was shocked when the referee and VAR turned aside.
‘How Rudiger didn’t receive a card for his stamp on MLS is beyond me,’ a third person said.
Arsenal will play the French champions in the semi-finals after PSG defeated Aston Villa on Tuesday. The first game is scheduled for April 29, two weeks from today.
On the opposite side of the Champions League bracket, Barcelona defeated Borussia Dortmund 5-3 on aggregate on Tuesday to advance to the final four, where they will play Inter Milan.
After a 2-2 draw on Wednesday, Inter defeated Bayern Munich 4-3 after two legs, demonstrating similar success against their respective German powerhouses.
