Liverpool eye Jeremie Frimpong as potential replacement for Alexander-Arnold
Jeremie Frimpong, the dynamic wing-back from Bayer Leverkusen, is reportedly keen on a move to Liverpool should the Premier League champions intensify their search for a new right-back this summer. With Trent Alexander-Arnold set to join Real Madrid, Frimpong is high on Liverpool’s shortlist to fill the void left by their star defender.
Frimpong, 24, has a €35 million (around £29.5m) release clause, which makes him an attractive option for top clubs, and his profile fits Liverpool’s needs. Despite some reports in Germany suggesting a deal is close, Mail Sport indicates that no agreement has been reached yet, with sources denying rumors of recent talks.
Frimpong, a former Manchester City youth product who also played for Celtic, has enjoyed an outstanding season at Leverkusen under Xabi Alonso, registering 5 goals and 12 assists after an even more impressive campaign the year before.
Liverpool’s interest in him was first noted in December 2024, and discussions have picked up since Alexander-Arnold revealed in March that he intended to leave the club.
Off the pitch, Frimpong made headlines by signing a £20 million boot deal with New Balance, joining elite company like Erling Haaland and Lionel Messi in terms of sponsorship value. Additionally, Celtic will benefit financially if Frimpong’s release clause is activated, as they are entitled to 30% of any profit from his sale, which would amount to around £5.4 million.
Beyond football, Frimpong is also known for his charitable work. In 2024, he launched the Pathways Project, aimed at supporting young players who don’t make it as professionals. His mission is to help those facing the difficult emotional challenges of rejection in their football careers.
With Alexander-Arnold’s exit imminent, Frimpong could be a key player in Arne Slot’s plans for Liverpool’s squad overhaul this summer.
