Haaland Wins FWA Player of the Season Award
The Norwegian laborer received eighty percent of the votes cast in the survey that was administered to four hundred FWA members. In second place behind Haaland is Bukayo Saka, followed by Martin Odegaard of Arsenal, Kevin de Bruyne of Manchester City, and Marcus Rashford of Manchester United.
In the past five years, Manchester City has had three different players that have won this accolade. Ruben Dias (2021) and Raheem Sterling (2019) are the other two players who have earned this honor in addition to Haaland. Haaland is the only player who has received this honor more than once. Following in the footsteps of Dias (2021), Gianfranco Zola (1997), and Jurgen Klinsmann (1995), Haaland became the fourth player in the history of the game to win this accolade in his first season playing in England.
“It’s an honor to be able to win this award,” Haaland stated after receiving it. “I make it a goal of mine to improve myself each and every day. This acknowledgment means a great deal to me. The people I play with at Man City are incredible. They open up a lot of doors for me to walk through. tallied a significant number of goals. I owe it to manager Pep Guardiola and everyone on the Manchester City team.”
In 34 Premier League games, Haaland was responsible for 35 goals scored. He scored more goals in a single season than the previous record holders, Alan Shearer and Andy Cole, who each had scored 34 goals. The previous record for most goals scored in a single season across all competitions was jointly held by Mohamed Salah (2017/18) and Ruud van Nistelrooy (2002/03), who scored a total of 44 goals. Haaland has 51 goals to his name.
The former star of Dortmund also established himself as the player who has scored the most goals in a season for Man City, surpassing the previous record held by Tommy Johnson, who had scored 38 goals in the 1928–1929 season. Additionally, Haaland is the youngest player to ever reach 30 goals in the Champions League at the fastest rate. On March 15, 2019, in the round of 16, the aforementioned former Dortmund star scored five goals in a 7-0 victory over RB Leipzig.
This year in the Premier League, Champions League, and FA Cup, Haaland and his colleagues have a chance to win all three competitions and take home the treble.
