During his team’s victory over Liverpool, Manchester City midfielder Rodri faced criticism that he ought to have been sent off, and Jürgen Klopp shared his thoughts on the matter.
According to Jurgen Klopp, Liverpool would not have defeated Manchester City on Saturday even if their opponents were reduced to ten ᴍᴇɴ.
The Reds lost 4-1 despite grabbing the lead at the Etihad Stadium thanks to Mohamed Salah. The defending Premier League winners earned a well-deserved victory thanks to goals from Julian Alvarez, Kevin De Bruyne, Ilkay Gundogan, and Jack Grealish.
Even yet, there was some dispute because Rodri was somewhat fortunate to avoid receiving two bookings in quick succession while also avoiding being dismissed. In his post-game press conference, Liverpool manager Klopp was questioned about the choice to let the midfielder carry on.
The German acknowledged that he might have received his marching orders, but he damningly asserted that his team’s poor performance at the Etihad meant they wouldn’t have won even with a man advantage.
“I didn’t see good enough,” he stated after the game. I understood the circumstances, but could he have received a second yellow? Probably, yes. Now he won’t understand it. Well, I do believe that against ten ᴍᴇɴ today, we might not have prevailed.
Former Swansea great Ashley Williams was one of those perplexed by the choice not to ᴇxᴘᴇʟ Rodri. “As a fan watching this game, that’s a yellow card, all day long that’s a second yellow card,” he stated in a statement to BBC Radio 5 Live. For me, it’s a perplexing one. What percentage of them do you observe receiving a yellow card?
Klopp persisted in criticizing his team’s performance and asserted that only a small number of his players emerged from the match with honor. The two midfielders, Hendo [Jordan Henderson] and Fab [Fabinho], worked extremely hard, as did Cody [Gakpo] and Ali [Alisson], and that is really difficult, he said, “Four performances were okay.
“If you want to get something here, 14 or 15 players have to be on top of their game and that was not the case.
“We had a situation for 3-2 when Robbo broke through but apart from that City could do what they ᴡᴀɴᴛᴇᴅ because the spaces were too big so we were lucky they only scored one more.”
In the next weeks, Klopp will undoubtedly work to get his team back on track as they attempt to qualify for the Champions League for the upcoming season but face a number of difficult games. The Reds are currently in eighth place and seven points behind fourth-placed Tottenham before games against Chelsea and the top-of-the-table Arsenal the following week.
The Merseysiders have not lost four straight games in any competition since 2014, and they have already suffered three straight losses.
