Caoimhin Kelleher should leave Liverpool, suggests Stephen Kenny, in order to reach his full potential.
Stephen Kenny, the manager of the Republic of Ireland, has advised Caoimhin Kelleher to leave Liverpool in order to reach his full potential.
Gavin Bazunu and Kelleher, both 24, are vying for the number one slot in Ireland’s squad going into the June Euro qualifiers.
The Irishman, who has advanced through the ranks at Liverpool, is second fiddle to Alisson Becker, the Reds’ star player. Now, because of how the latter has performed over time, the former primarily receives cup games to display his talent.
Considering those factors, the Ireland manager’s response to a question regarding Kelleher and his future is as follows (h/t Independent):
“I completely anticipate that. Normally, it would not be appropriate to discuss a player transferring, but at this point, he is likely trailing one of the top goalkeepers in the world, and things are not going to get any better.
He simply cannot afford to not play. He is aware of this and has been for some time. It’s not simple. He is aware that there is a procedure to follow when joining a club of that caliber, and I don’t think it would be unexpected for him to move in the summer.
Kelleher won’t be leaving Liverpool, though, according to manager Jurgen Klopp, unless an amazing offer is made. The goalkeeper is one position the club won’t be overly concerned about in the transfer window, according to the German, because they have excellent choices.
The 24-year-old is reportedly being pursued by Tottenham Hotspur, Brentford, and Brighton, according to an article published in the Irish Independent a few weeks ago. Brentford has a new goalie, thus they must no longer be in the running. The other two might continue to look for a settlement.
Kelleher must be tempted to leave and play regular football, even if Klopp would want him to remain as a number two since he is that talented.
Liverpool can give him permission to depart, but with a condition. In his contract with the subsequent team, they could include a buyback clause. Therefore, the club will have the option to repurchase the Ireland international if Alisson departs.
The Reds would acquire Kelleher in this scenario in better physical condition and with more experience than he currently has. If the keeper wants to depart this summer, the club needs to consider this possibility soon.
