Thiago is unlikely to receive a new contract from Liverpool that would allow him to leave after a year.
The midfielder, who arrived from Bayern Munich in 2020, is now far into his 30s and hasn’t consistently performed to expectations. Thiago’s tenure at Anfield has been marred by injury problems, which have reduced his playing time, while some have questioned his appropriateness in a Jurgen Klopp team.
Thiago doesn’t seem to be part of Liverpool’s long-term plans as they overhaul their midfield in an effort to reenergize their team. According to Goal, the Spaniard’s current deal will likely be extended, although he is not anticipated to be traded this summer.
An ageing team has struggled to execute Klopp’s aggressive gameplan, which has previously led to so much success but has left them exposed several times in the past year as they failed to make the top four, so club executives at Anfield are determined to avoid locking players down past their prime years.
The Reds are looking for new blood in the middle of the park this summer, thus James Milner, Alex Oxlade-Chamerlain, and Naby Keita are all leaving. As players like Jordan Henderson, Fabinho, Harvey Elliott, and Stefan Bajcetic compete for positions moving forward, Klopp is left with a mix of young and elderly players.
They passed on adding new midfielders last summer, a decision that has since been criticized, and there have been rumors that they will spend a lot of money this summer. Jude Bellingham had been a target, but Liverpool withdrew from the running after learning the cost of the transaction would be too much for them. They are currently associated with people like Manu Kone, Alexis Mac Allister, and Mason Mount.
The Champions League and Premier League titles that Liverpool won in back-to-back seasons without breaking the money led to them being hailed as Europe’s gold standard in terms of recruiting.
However, some of their recent partnerships have failed, which has caused them to lag behind domestic competitors. However, Klopp is certain that their success will not be hampered by the absence of Champions League competition: “It is a beautiful club with a really excellent football squad and even better, hopefully, next year.
“I’ve hardly ever encountered the circumstance where you speak with a player and everything is going well and he says, ‘okay see you if…'” That doesn’t occur very frequently. We shouldn’t forget that we are still Liverpool and that we are very appealing to many players. I have no concern about the fact because of that.
