Paul Machin, a Redmen TV host, claims that Liverpool has to “weed out” guys like Jol Matip from their roster.
Because of his age and injury issues, the central defender has been linked with a move away from Anfield, and Machin believes that this could be a good time for him to move on.
Forza Roma claims that Jürgen Klopp has authorized Matip to leave Liverpool this summer.
According to the same source, Jose Mourinho and AS Roma are reportedly interested in the 31-year-old.
According to Transfermarkt, Matip was only able to make 14 Premier League games this season.
His stay at Liverpool has been successful overall, though. Matip has helped Klopp’s team win numerous awards, including the Champions League and Premier League, after his 2016 transfer from Schalke to Merseyside.
What has Paul Machin said about Liverpool’s Jol Matip?
Recently, Machin expressed his opinion that both goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher and teammate Matip should leave Liverpool.
The Redmen TV host told GIVEMESPORT about the former Cameroon international, “The other one is Jol Matip. I believe Liverpool has to start letting go of injured players above the age of 30, and I also believe the defense needs to be slightly refreshed.
And if I had to choose between, say, Joe Gomez and Matip, I would choose Gomez over Matip because of his age and the fact that he is a homegrown player.
What kind of value has Jol Matip provided for Liverpool?
There is no arguing that Matip has been an outstanding acquisition for the Reds, despite his advancing age and certain injury difficulties.
He joined from Schalke on a free transfer, as was already established, and has assisted them in winning titles without incurring any financial obligation to the club.
Matip has appeared 187 times for Liverpool in total, earning £100,000 a week at Anfield, per Spotrac (also through Transfermarkt). Without the injuries, it probably would have been higher.
With Matip’s contract expiring next year and Klopp having access to Virgil van Dijk and the much younger Ibrahima Konaté, it’s possible that his time at Anfield is coming to an end. It might be wise to sell him right now.
Whatever transpires, the former Schalke star can take pride in his accomplishments as a Liverpool player and look back with satisfaction.
