Redmen TV host Paul Machin claims that Liverpool has to “weed out” guys like Jol Matip from their roster.
Because of his age and injury issues, Machin believes that the central defender may be ready to move on at this point. He has been linked with a move away from Anfield.
Forza Roma reports that Matip has been given permission by Jürgen Klopp to depart Liverpool this summer.
The same source asserts that Jose Mourinho and AS Roma are both interested in the 31-year-old in terms of where he might end up.
According to Transfermarkt, Matip was only able to make 14 appearances in the Premier League this year.
Overall though, he’s had a productive tenure at Liverpool. Matip has aided Klopp’s team in winning numerous awards, including the Champions League and Premier League, since moving to Merseyside from Schalke back in 2016.
What was mentioned about Jol Matip and Liverpool by Paul Machin?
In a recent interview, Machin said that his teammate Matip and goalie Caoimhin Kelleher should both leave Liverpool.
When asked about the former Cameroon international, the Redmen TV host responded, “The other one is Jol Matip. I believe Liverpool has to start letting go of players who are past the age of 30 and have a history of injuries, and I also believe the defense needs to be slightly refreshed.
“And if I had to choose between, say, [Joe] Gomez and Matip, I’d say that Gomez’s age and the fact that he is a native of the United States favor him over Matip in that regard.”
How cheap of a buy was Jol Matip for Liverpool?
Matip is getting older and he has experienced injury problems, but there’s no denying that the Reds made a fantastic decision by signing him.
He joined from Schalke on a free transfer and, as was already noted, helped them win titles without costing the club a dime.
Matip has made a total of 187 appearances for Liverpool (also via Transfermarkt), where he reportedly earns £100,000 a week, according to Spotrac. It simply could have been more if there had been no injuries.
Matip’s contract expires next year, so perhaps Klopp’s time at Anfield is winding down now that Virgil van Dijk and the much younger Ibrahima Konaté are at his disposal. Perhaps this is the right time to sell him.
However things turn out, the former Schalke star can be proud of his accomplishments while playing for Liverpool.
